The Postcards Postcard

These are for you.

Part souvenir, part handheld frame, you can find these postcards at various sites during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

They’re free, and given out by friendly and charming attendants.

Please use them. Imagine the iconic skyline of Vancouver merged with your own surroundings. Consider it with your skyline, your beautiful sunset, your breakfast, your garbage, your cat. Take pictures of what you see.

Then take the next step: upload these to our flickr group, VancouverVancouverVancouver and we’ll upload them to this site as part of the galleries.

It is easier than you think. Go to Get Involved to check it out.

KioskThe Kiosk

You might see other kiosks around. Lots of them. They may distribute hot dogs or coffee, tourist information, t-shirts and program books, useful maps and schedules. This kiosk will have none of these things. Sorry.

This kiosk is a sculpture and a trailer and it will move around, looking for people like you.

You will find Vancouver Vancouver Vancouver postcards here, and some friendly attendants in handsome jackets.

Please interact with us. Tell us what you think.

Take a postcard with you and think of the landscape as your own.

The Website

And here you are.

While the kiosk is only mobile during the dates of the 2010 Olympic and the Paralympic Games, this website goes on as long as we let it and as long as it should. We invite you to share your images with us, for the fun of it, and so we can bring together as many views of the Vancouver skyline as there are viewers. (Of course that’s not really possible, but we’ll certainly try.)

Here’s some instructions for posting your images.

About the Artist

Vanessa Kwan is a Vancouver-based artist. She has worked in a number of contexts and venues, having created work for galleries and artist-run centres across Canada, in print and on streets, onstage and outdoors, and with the performance collective Norma. Her work often considers mainstream modes of communication– signs, postcards, text and popular imagery–and their relationship to individual experiences of landscape and culture. She graduated from Emily Carr University in 2004.
